Two years ago, Newmarket got its cinema back. What began as a bold community ambition to give the town its own permanent big screen has become a thriving part of local life and today Newmarket Charitable Foundation (NCF) is proud to celebrate the second anniversary of Kings Cinema at the Kings Theatre.
Since opening its doors in April 2024, 222 different films and arts events have been screened and the cinema has established itself as a genuine cultural hub for Newmarket and the surrounding communities. From blockbuster releases to family matinees and live streams from National Theatre and ballet companies, the ever-changing programme has brought people together week after week, proving that great cinema doesn’t require a journey out of town.
The cinema was made possible through a successful collaboration between NCF, Abbeygate Cinemas and NOMADS (Newmarket Operatic, Musical & Dramatic Society), with backing from West Suffolk Council, Newmarket Town Council and Suffolk County Council.
Josh Schunmann, CEO of Newmarket Charitable Foundation, said: “Seeing Kings Cinema become such a valued part of town life has been incredibly rewarding. From our initial steps building local interest through the mobile cinema to gaining the necessary partnerships, we set out to help create a permanent quality cinema accessible to everyone. Now, two years on, we are delighted that the cinema is now fully established in the heart of the town.”
For the team at Kings Cinema, who have been working hard to promote the cinema since day one, the results go beyond the screen. They have opened their doors more than 400 times since the operations began and have welcomed nearly 17000 admissions to date with over 3000 pots of popcorn and more than 2350 ice-creams purchased.
Juanita Richard, Associate Kings Cinema Manager said, “It has been wonderful to watch the cinema growing, getting to know the customers and watching friendships form and flourish. It is an honour to provide a space where people can meet up and catch up or just relax and cut off. The local support has been amazing including partnerships with The Pantry and The National Horseracing Museum and of course our amazing, valued members! We are excited and looking forward to keeping you all entertained as we continue to grow.”
Kings Cinema continues to screen the latest releases with evening and matinee showings from Wednesday to Sunday most weeks, alongside a membership programme offering ticket discounts and partner offers.
