New ‘Stable Start’ project off to a flying success.

Newmarket Charitable Foundation has announced the launch of Stable Start, an exciting new initiative designed to support young people entering the racing industry by providing accommodation within a welcoming and supportive household environment.

Developed in partnership with the British Racing School and generously funded predominately by the Racing Foundation, Stable Start connects aspiring young racing professionals with local hosts who can offer both accommodation and support as they embark on their careers.

Andrew Braithwaite, CEO of the British Racing School, highlighted the initiative’s significance: “When our students complete their training, they begin their careers in yards across Newmarket and beyond. Having access to safe and supportive accommodation during this crucial transition can make a huge difference in their experience and success. Hosts participating in the Stable Start project will also receive comprehensive support as they house and mentor our young learners.

Josh Schunmann, Director of the Newmarket Charitable Foundation, echoed this sentiment: “This project addresses a critical need within the racing industry. Ensuring young people have access to quality accommodation not only helps them settle into their new roles but also strengthens their connection to the local community. We are delighted to partner with the British Racing School and our funders to bring this initiative to life.”

Tansy Challis, Chief Executive at the Racing Foundation, said: “We are pleased to support the Stable Start initiative, which will play an important role in ensuring the next generation of racing professionals has the foundation they need to succeed. The Racing Foundation has funded a number of programmes aimed at supporting a diverse cohort of young people entering the industry and see this as a vital part of building a sustainable future for the sport. By providing young people with safe, supportive accommodation, Stable Start will create a positive environment for them to thrive in.”

Stable Start is backed by additional funding from two key industry leaders, Godolphin and Tattersalls. Their contributions will enable a two-year pilot programme, with the goal of creating a sustainable model that can be expanded both in Newmarket and across the country.

Hugh Anderson, Managing Director (UK and Dubai), Godolphin, added: “Godolphin is delighted to support the Stable Start programme. Assisting and supporting young people starting out in our sport is absolutely vital and we look forward to seeing this new initiative develop with the valuable support from the Newmarket community.
