Stable Start builds local support for young people starting careers in racing

Newmarket has long been a place where racing careers begin. Each year young people move here from across the country to train and work in the industry. For many the biggest challenge is not the work itself but finding somewhere safe and settled to live.

Stable Start was created to help meet that need. The project supports young people aged 16 to 17 who are starting training or employment in racing by matching them with local hosts who can offer a safe and supportive home environment.

The scheme is managed by Zoe Daniells and is based at the British Racing School. Since launching last year, the focus has been on putting strong safeguarding and support systems in place. With these foundations established the project is now actively recruiting host families and individuals in and around Newmarket.

A practical local solution

Finding suitable accommodation has historically been difficult for young people entering racing. Stable Start was developed to address this gap by working with local hosts who have a spare room and are willing to offer a supportive presence.

Hosting through Stable Start involves renting out a room in your home. Hosts are not expected to provide care or supervision. Instead, the role is about offering a stable home environment and being a trusted adult presence during an important transition period.

Hosts receive rent and are fully supported by the scheme throughout the process. Initial conversations are informal and there is no obligation to proceed.

Strong partnerships behind the project

Stable Start is funded primarily by the Racing Foundation with additional support from Godolphin and Tattersalls. The project is also backed by Newmarket Charitable Foundation.

Josh Schunmann from Newmarket Charitable Foundation said the scheme is ready to demonstrate the difference it can make to young people arriving in the town to begin their careers.

A call to the Newmarket community

Newmarket attracts young people from both racing and non-racing backgrounds who all need the same thing at the start of their working lives. Stability. Safety and a supportive base.

“This project is about giving young people a safe and supportive start at an important point in their lives,” said Zoe. “We have been really encouraged by the response from the local community so far and would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in hosting.”
